People think of wrinkles as the ultimate signs of aging, but when you look at a person’s photos and compare an image from their 20th birthday with one from the dreaded 50th, what’s really striking is the loss of volume. The cheeks flatten and sink downward. The lips thin and wrinkle. Around the mouth, wrinkles form and deepen without underlying support.

Two things really. The first problem is collagen. Collagen is the protein that provides the skin’s underlying support framework. It keeps the skin firm and plump. But at that same 20th birthday, collagen begins its inexorable decline. The body produces one percent less collagen every year after it turns 20, so at 50 your skin is now dealing with a 30 percent decline in collagen production. Considering this, no wonder things start to droop and sink. The other problems are simple aging and gravity. The constant downward force, coupled with weakening muscle and support tissue, adds to the forces loosening your skin. Throw in environmental damage from the sun, weather, and personal habits and you have a perfect storm of facial aging.

Dermal fillers replace some of that lost volume. At Acclaim Dermatology, in Sugar Land, TX, we offer a variety of dermal fillers including three products in the Juvéderm® family: Juvéderm® XC, Juvéderm® Voluma XC, and Juvéderm® Ultra XC. Each is intended to address a different area of the face and replace decreased volume.

What Is A Dermal Filler?
Dermal fillers, as their name implies, are injected beneath a wrinkle, crease, or area needing volume and they fill in the area, pushing the skin back upward. Some fillers are hyaluronic acid based, and bind with water molecules. Others use calcium microspheres or gel to add volume.
What Is Juvéderm®?
All the Juvéderm® fillers are hyaluronic acid based. Hyaluronic acid is a naturally occurring substance in the body whose job is to hydrate and plump the skin. When injected, Juvéderm® binds with water molecules in the area to firm the skin, add volume and fill wrinkles.
Is Juvéderm® The Same As Botox?
Juvéderm® and Botox work in entirely different ways. As noted above, Juvederm works by binding with water molecules and filling a wrinkle or volume-deficient area from below. Juvéderm® works on what are called static wrinkles, wrinkles that show themselves at all times.

Botox is a neuromodulator. It uses the botulinum toxin to temporarily paralyze a muscle that is forming a wrinkle above it. Botox works on dynamic wrinkles, wrinkles that are formed by muscle contractions when we perform common behaviors such as frowning or squinting.
What Do The Different Juvederm Fillers Address?
Juvéderm® XC Parentheses are useful for noting an aside in your writing, but they’re unwelcome on your face. As the skin loses elasticity and moisture, some people form relatively deep parentheses lines and wrinkles around the nose and mouth. These are also referred to as nasolabial folds. You hear about all sorts of “anti-aging” serums and creams, but they only moisturize the skin’s surface. Juvéderm® XC adds volume beneath the skin to smooth theselines and folds.
Juvéderm® Voluma XC
Experts call it “age-related midface volume loss.” You call it sagging cheeks. Over time as you lose the collagen to support your skin and as your underlying muscles weaken, your cheeks flatten. Juvéderm® Voluma XC is designed to add volume beneath the skin’s surface to lift and contour the cheek area. Plump cheeks are a tenet of a younger look.

Juvéderm® Ultra XC
You may not think about your lips with facial aging, but our lips thin as we get older, losing the same support as our skin. Other women have never been happy with the fullness of their lips. Juvéderm® Ultra XC provides or returns fullness and fills the vertical wrinkles that form on our lips.
How Long Does Juvéderm® Last?
● All three Juvéderm® formulations are long lasting. Is There Anything To Avoid Immediately After My Juvéderm® Session?
Because Juvéderm® is primarily made of hyaluronic acid (which occurs naturally in the body) any reactions are very rare. After your injections, you should avoid really hot environments such as saunas or steamy baths until the next day. You shouldn’t have any sun exposure for a day or so. And try not to touch or poke the area where you received the Juvéderm® injections, as this can spread the filler to adjacent areas where it is not wanted.
